Of all the 31 districts in Tamilnadu, roughly 50% of the districts [14 districts] are reeling under severe deficiency of rainfall i.e departure from Normal rainfall is greater than [-] 20%. [Data based on 24.09.2011 seasonal rainfall]. The south & west interior district like Kanyakumari, Virudunagar, Madurai, Dindigul, Karur, Namakkal, Tiruppur etc are experiencing deficient rainfall contrary to belief that it may get sufficient rainfall during SWM period. Similarly some of the coastal districts including Chennai are experiencing normal to excess rainfall for this period. That is mainly due to frequent formation of trough along and off the coast in the Bay and which can be accounted for relatively more rainfall in Cuddalore, Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur, & Chennai districts. However for entire Tamilnadu the actual rainfall [as on date 24.09.2011] is 28.7cm against Normal rainfall of 29.0cm giving departure from normal as[-] 2%. This [-2] % comes under NORMAL category
